Pro-Palestine Protesters Block US Warship Transporting Weapons to Israel

In a bold act of protest, a group of pro-Palestine demonstrators gathered at a San Francisco port on Friday, aiming to disrupt the transportation of weapons and military equipment to Israel amid its ongoing conflict with Gaza. The protesters, estimated to be around 800 in number, congregated near the USNS Harvey Milk, which was docked and preparing to transport supplies to Israeli-occupied territories.

Pictures and videos circulating on social media captured the moment when eight protesters chained themselves to the gangway of the ship, while others chanted slogans in solidarity with Palestine. The demonstration, organized by groups such as the Arab Resource Organizing Center (AROC) and the Palestinian Youth Movement, denounced the United States' unwavering support for Israel, which includes financial and logistical backing during its military operations in Gaza.

Carrying signs and banners calling for a ceasefire and an end to US-funded arms shipments to Israel, the American protesters voiced their outrage at what they perceive as Washington's complicity in Israel's actions. Lara Kiswani, the executive director of AROC, condemned the US government's role in supporting what she described as "genocide against the people of Gaza."

Reports from the scene indicated that 14 protesters were arrested by local law enforcement, and a planned media event featuring former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was canceled due to the protests. Kiswani emphasized the widespread opposition to Israel's actions both domestically and internationally, urging political leaders like Pelosi to advocate for an immediate ceasefire.

The demonstration occurred amidst reports that President Joe Biden had authorized the transfer of billions of dollars' worth of arms to Israel in recent days, despite concerns raised about the escalating conflict. The move has drawn criticism from activists and politicians alike, who argue that such support only exacerbates the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and undermines efforts for peace in the region.

The protest serves as a poignant reminder of the growing grassroots movement in the United States advocating for Palestinian rights and condemning US policies perceived as enabling Israeli aggression.
